a little bit about me….

I love plants.

They have been some of my wisest teachers, and greatest allies. I have an enormous amount of respect for these “more than human” beings.

I have over 20-years of professional experience collaborating with plants and people, in the fields of ethnobotany, agroecology, permaculture design and education. This work has presented me with varied and exciting opportunities, and incredible teachers, for which I am very grateful.

Runn Lake, Sweden

I am a first-generation settler of a Swedish mother and a Hungarian father, and I am one of 4 sisters. I was born on the homelands of the Algonquin and Mohawk peoples, and as a child spent significant time living in both northern Sweden and India. As an adult I have lived in Nicaragua, the Caribbean and the Pacific Northwest of Canada and the U.S. I am held and uplifted by a strong community of friends: movers and shakers, land-stewards, artists and intellectuals.

Being in relationship to plants initiates multiple, layered threads of connection and understanding. I’m so grateful to have found such a deep love in this work, which keeps me curious and learning.

Forever in gratitude for the informal “trainings”. The ones that take place at kitchen tables, on rainy hikes, or with hands in the soil. Forever in gratitude for all my teachers, who seem to be everywhere in the form of friends, both young and old, all equally wise.

“Hannah has been a mentor, teacher, and voice of reason throughout the past decade of my personal and professional growth. I’ve known Hannah since her student days at UVic. A talented photographer, expert in local food production systems, and wonderful research collaborator, she has contributed to our society and our environment here in Canada in so many ways! In particular, she has devoted her research and ecocultural restoration talents in the past two decades to helping enhance food security and food sovereignty for First Nations communities across British Columbia.”
